Best By is built to answer one question: what's in your fridge and when does it go bad? We collect the minimum needed to do that, and nothing else.

What we collect

• Your account. Your email address, your name (if you share it via Apple, Google, or type it in), and a random account ID. We use these to sign you in and show who added what in a shared household.
• Your food items. The items, brands, prices, purchase dates, and expiry dates you add — whether scanned from a receipt or typed by hand.
• Crash reports. If the app crashes, a technical report goes to Sentry so we can fix it. Crash reports are not linked to your identity.

Receipt photos

When you scan a receipt, the photo is sent to Anthropic's AI API, which reads the food items off it. The photo is used only for that extraction and is not stored — not by us, and not kept by the API after parsing. What we keep is the resulting list of items and, so you can fix mistakes, the extracted text.

Where your data lives

Your data is stored with Supabase, our database and authentication provider, on servers in the United States. A copy of your current fridge is cached on your device so the app works offline.

Households are shared

If you join a household, its other members can see the items you add, edit them, and see your name and the initial on your avatar. That's the point of households — don't join one with people you don't want seeing your groceries.

What we don't do

• We don't sell your data. To anyone. Ever.
• We don't run ads or advertising trackers.
• We don't track you across other apps or websites.
• We don't collect your location.

Notifications and calendar

Expiry reminders are scheduled on your device. If you turn on calendar sync, Best By writes expiry events to a dedicated calendar on your device; that data goes wherever your calendar account lives (for example iCloud) and is under your control.

Deleting your account

In the app, go to Household → gear icon → Delete account. This permanently deletes your account, your profile, your memberships, and any household where you are the only member. It takes effect immediately and cannot be undone.
